Manufacturer Selection Method

The model number is only part of the decision.

Universal Punch starts with the inspection characteristic, then confirms part support, measuring components, access and production workflow before the final configuration is quoted.

01

What must be measured?

Concentricity, runout, pitch diameter, functional diameter, penetration, height, length, wobble, torque or another characteristic.

02

How is the part supported?

Support surfaces, shoulders, threads, recesses, datum relationships and available lands affect the fixture architecture.

03

How should it be measured?

Indicators, probes, thread rolls, segments, masters, carriers and data-output requirements can change the build.

04

How will inspection operate?

Bench, machine-side, production, receiving, laboratory, SPC, portable or automated workflows influence the final configuration.

Technical System Directory

Every current recess-gage model is represented.

The selector includes all 17 current product entries on the Universal Punch Gaging page, while the directory below gives experienced users a direct path to each product page.

Common Inspection Questions

Direct answers from the manufacturer.

These answers explain the selector’s role without overstating a preliminary recommendation as a final engineering configuration.

How do I choose the right gage if I do not know the model number?

Start with the inspection characteristic. The selector narrows the appropriate Universal Punch family from what must be measured, the part or feature type, and the required inspection outcome. Universal Punch then confirms the final ordered configuration.

Does the selector make the final engineering selection?

No. It provides a technically useful starting recommendation. Final measuring components, support geometry, indicators, masters, rollers, probes, tolerances, standards, and ordered configuration should be confirmed from the actual application.

What gage is used for external thread pitch diameter?

The #12000 External 3-POINT Thread Gage is a primary variable-reading starting platform for external thread pitch diameter and related thread conditions. Final rolls, master, frame size, and indicator configuration are application-specific.

What if I need a TX, Hexalobular or TXP recess gage?

Choose Drive, Recess & Fastener Features, then Internal Drive / Recess Gaging. The selector includes the current 1180, 1190, 1280 and 1290-series product paths represented on the Universal Punch gaging catalog.

When should I send Universal Punch the part drawing?

Send the drawing whenever support surfaces, datum relationships, feature access, tolerance, measurement position, thread callout, drive standard, or the final gage configuration cannot be confirmed from the basic application questions.

Can I search by model number instead?

Yes. The expert shortcut at the top of the page searches the Universal Punch gaging and fixture index by model number, family, or inspection term.

Application Engineering

Have a print? Skip the guesswork.

Send the part drawing and identify what must be measured. Universal Punch can confirm the gage family, support or measuring geometry, measuring components, indicator or master requirements, and final fixture configuration.
