Direct Product Definition

The motorized counterpart to the LG-20 measurement platform.

The Universal Punch LGM-20 combines the -20 Lazer Gage platform with powered component rotation. The current 281-20 assembly is published as a variable-speed motor system that includes the motor plate.

The component is supported beneath the adjustable measurement-head structure and rotated at the selected speed and direction. The resulting variation is interpreted from the drawing, datum structure and approved inspection procedure.

Motorization controls rotation. It does not automatically establish the inspection datum, determine what the reading means or prove every GD&T concentricity requirement.

Application Selection

Choose LGM-20 when the application requires dedicated powered rotation.

Choose LGM-20

Motorized -20 configuration

For parts within the published capacity when controlled, hands-free, variable-speed rotation is part of the inspection method.

Choose LG-20

Non-motorized counterpart

For the same published capacity when a dedicated motorized LGM drive is unnecessary.

Confirm Another Model

Different measurement architecture

Use an indicator-style or custom platform when the drawing requires another contact direction, support arrangement or inspection method.

LG/LGM distinction: LG-20 and LGM-20 share the same published -20 component-capacity class. LGM-20 is distinguished by its dedicated motorized rotation architecture.

Measurement-Head Architecture

Configure the measurement around the actual inspection characteristic.

Define the feature, datum, expected variation, required resolution, working distance, clearance, surface finish, reflectivity, measurement direction and desired output before selecting the complete head and electronics package.

“Lazer Gage” is the manufacturer product-family name. It does not, by itself, establish that every quoted LGM-20 uses the same non-contact optical sensor.

One photographed measurement head, electronic package or cable arrangement should not be assumed to be standard for every LGM-20.

Inspection Process

How LGM-20 is configured and used

Powered rotation is one part of the inspection system. Support, datum and measurement configuration still control the meaning of the result.

Motorization Guardrail

Rotation does not change the class

Motorization does not independently increase the published measurement accuracy.

Calibration

Specify the required calibration, certificate, reporting and traceability documentation.

Classification guardrail: Do not automatically relabel LGM-20 as Precision Gold. Final performance depends on the measurement system, support, rotation, surface condition, environment, calibration status and inspection procedure.

Technical FAQ

LGM-20 questions and direct answers

What is the Universal Punch LGM-20?
The LGM-20 is a motorized Lazer Gage configuration for cylindrical components from 3/8 to 2 inches, or 10 to 50 millimeters, in diameter and up to 6 inches, or 152 millimeters, long. It combines the LG-20 measurement platform with powered variable-speed rotation.
What does LGM-20 mean?
LGM identifies Universal Punch's Motorized Lazer Gage family. The -20 suffix identifies the intermediate 3/8 to 2 inch, or 10 to 50 millimeter, component-capacity platform.
Why is Lazer Gage spelled with a z?
Lazer Gage is the product-family spelling used in Universal Punch documentation. The page preserves that manufacturer naming while also describing the product as a concentricity gage for search and selection clarity.
What size parts can the LGM-20 support?
The published LGM-20 capacity is 3/8 to 2 inches, or 10 to 50 millimeters, in diameter and up to 6 inches, or 152 millimeters, long. Support-land geometry and access must also be reviewed before the application is approved.
What does the catalog's 2 micrometer accuracy statement mean?
The current parts list identifies the underlying LG-20 Lazer Gage platform at 2 micrometers or less. The complete LGM-20 configuration must still be confirmed because performance depends on the measurement system, support, rotation, surface condition, environment, calibration status and inspection procedure.
Is LGM-20 automatically a Precision Gold gage?
No. The LGM-20 page preserves the catalog's qualified accuracy statement and does not automatically relabel LGM-20 as Precision Gold. Confirm the required accuracy classification and documentation with Universal Punch during quotation.
What is the difference between LG-20 and LGM-20?
LG-20 is the non-motorized steel-base Lazer Gage. LGM-20 is its dedicated motorized counterpart for the same published 3/8 to 2 inch capacity class.
What is the 281-20 motor assembly?
The 2025 Universal Punch parts list identifies 281-20 as the LGM-20 variable-speed motor assembly and states that it includes the motor plate.
Is LGM-20 motorized?
Yes. Motorized rotation is the defining LGM-20 feature. The current system is published as a 24 VDC variable-speed drive with a 0 to 10 rpm range and forward/reverse control.
What voltage does LGM-20 use?
The current variable-speed system is published as 24 VDC. The available 296-00 international transformer converts 110 VAC or 220 VAC input to 24 VDC at 1 amp.
What is the LGM-20 speed range?
The current Universal Punch parts list publishes a variable-speed range of 0 to 10 rpm for the 24 VDC drive system.
Does LGM-20 provide forward and reverse rotation?
Yes. The current motorized-system description includes forward/reverse control together with variable speed.
Is a foot switch available for LGM-20?
Yes. The parts list identifies 937179T as an available industrial-grade foot switch. Confirm whether it and the required transformer are included in the quoted configuration.
Does motorization increase LGM-20 measurement accuracy?
Motorization controls component rotation but does not independently increase the published measurement accuracy class. Accuracy still depends on the complete measurement, support, setup, environment and calibration configuration.
Does Lazer Gage always mean a non-contact laser system?
No. Lazer Gage is the manufacturer's published product-family name. The page does not assume a specific non-contact optical sensor unless that measurement-head configuration is confirmed in the quotation.
Can LGM-20 be used for runout inspection?
LGM-20 may support runout or concentricity-related inspection when its supports, rotational datum, measurement location and procedure are configured for that characteristic. Submit the drawing and tolerance for application review.
Does an LGM-20 reading automatically prove GD&T concentricity?
No. A displayed variation is meaningful only in relation to the selected support datum, measurement location and inspection method. The system does not automatically prove every GD&T concentricity requirement without an application-specific method.
How are LGM-20 component supports selected?
Support selection considers usable journal diameters and widths, support spacing, shoulders, flanges, grooves, threads, splines, diameter transitions, component stiffness, unsupported span and proximity to the measured feature.
Is calibration and traceability documentation available?
Universal Punch describes its calibration support as NIST traceable. Specify the required certificate, reporting and traceability documentation when requesting the quotation because documentation requirements can vary by application.
What should I send for an LGM-20 quote?
Send the component drawing, diameter range, overall length, support-journal geometry, feature and datum to be evaluated, tolerance, expected range, required resolution, material and surface information, desired speed and direction, controller or foot-switch requirements, output requirements and calibration-documentation requirements.
