Direct Definition

KK1 architecture with the large -40 inspection envelope.

The Universal Punch KK1-40 is a large-capacity triple-indicator concentricity gage. The model combines one Standard Carrier with two separate Side Carriers around the same component support system.

KK1 identifies the carrier relationship. -40 identifies the nominal 3/4-4 in component class.

The defining KK1-40 capability is not simply three indicators. It is one Standard Carrier plus two independently configurable Side Carrier measurement positions on the large -40 platform.
Metric documentation note: The product catalog publishes 20-102 mm, corresponding to the nominal four-inch limit. The current parts list describes KK1-40 as a 20-105 mm model class. Submit the actual component diameter so Universal Punch can confirm the current production configuration.

Model Selection

Is KK1-40 the right concentricity gage?

Start with component size, then choose the number and direction of indicator-access positions required by the inspection method.

Choose KK1-40

Standard + Two Side

Choose KK1-40 when the -40 envelope applies and the inspection needs a Standard Carrier plus two Side Carrier positions.

Consider K1-40

Standard + One Side

Choose K1-40 when two indicator positions are sufficient and only one secondary Side Carrier is needed.

Consider KK2-40

Standard + Side + Vertical

Choose KK2-40 when the third measurement requires Vertical Carrier access instead of a second Side Carrier.

Consider G1-40

One Side Position

Choose G1-40 when a single Side Carrier inspection position is sufficient for the application.

Triple-Indicator Architecture

Three measurement positions. One supported rotational setup.

Each indicator position is configured from the component drawing, contact geometry, datum relationship and inspection objective.

1

Standard Carrier

The primary configurable indicator position for the component and inspection procedure.

2

First Side Carrier

A separate lateral-access position that can be aligned to another feature or axial location.

3

Second Side Carrier

An additional lateral-access position configured around the same supported component.

The indicators do not represent three permanently assigned characteristics. What each position evaluates depends on the support surfaces, datum structure, contact point, indicator direction, tolerance and documented inspection method.

Position One

Configure the Standard Carrier from the component drawing.

The Standard Carrier establishes the primary indicator position. Final contact location should be based on the feature being evaluated and its relationship to the component support datums.

  • Feature and datum relationship
  • Probe direction and clearance
  • Indicator range and resolution
  • Stylus reach and contact geometry
  • Shoulders, flanges and grooves
  • Threads, splines and transitions

Positions Two and Three

Two Side Carriers define the KK1 architecture.

KK1-40 adds two separate lateral-access measurement positions around the same support system. Each Side Carrier can be configured for the required contact point, clearance and indicator reach.

This is the central distinction from K1-40, which provides only one secondary Side Carrier, and KK2-40, which substitutes a Vertical Carrier for the second Side Carrier.

Choose KK1-40 when both additional measurement positions require Side Carrier access. Choose KK2-40 when one of those positions must approach through the Vertical Carrier architecture.

-40 Support System

Select main rollers from the component's usable support geometry.

Nominal diameter establishes the model class. It does not, by itself, establish the correct support configuration.

Standard -40 Top Roller

230-40 · 1 × 5/16 in

Approximately 25 × 8 mm. The current manufacturer parts list identifies 230-40 as the standard -40 top roller.

Selection Inputs

Review the complete support area.

Consider support-land widths, shoulders, flanges, grooves, threads, splines, diameter transitions, support spacing, component stiffness and all three measurement positions.

A component being within the four-inch KK1-40 capacity does not automatically determine the correct roller set. Support geometry must be selected from the actual component.

Inspection Process

How the KK1-40 is configured and used

All three readings reference the same supported rotational setup, while each contact position can address a different inspection location.

Example triple-indicator inspection configuration. Measurement meaning depends on the documented setup.

Confirm capacity

Verify diameter, overall length and the usable support surfaces.

Select rollers

Choose the -40 support geometry from the actual component lands.

Set the Standard Carrier

Position the primary indicator from the drawing and datum structure.

Set both Side Carriers

Configure the two lateral-access indicators for their required locations.

Rotate the component

Rotate smoothly through the inspection cycle manually or with the optional drive.

Interpret each reading

Evaluate every indicator against its applicable tolerance and inspection method.

KK1-40 provides three indicator readings from one supported setup. Whether those readings represent runout, concentricity-related variation or another feature relationship depends on the support datums, contact positions and inspection procedure.
Published Accuracy Classification
