K1-20 Definition

The -20 dual-indicator gage with Standard + Side Carrier access.

K1 identifies Universal Punch's dual-indicator architecture using a Standard Carrier plus Side Carrier. -20 identifies the 3/8–2 in / 10–50 mm component class.

The K1-20 is designed for inspections where two probe positions are useful around one supported rotational setup, and where the second measurement location benefits from lateral Side Carrier access.

The Universal Punch K1-20 is a dual-indicator concentricity gage for 3/8–2 in (10–50 mm) diameter cylindrical parts up to 6 in (152 mm) long. It combines a Standard Carrier with a Side Carrier so two indicator measurement positions can be configured around the same supported rotating component.

Dual-Indicator Architecture

Two indicators are useful because they provide two different measurement-access positions.

The defining benefit of K1-20 is not simply the presence of two indicators. It is the combination of Standard Carrier access plus lateral Side Carrier access around the same rotating component.

Measurement Position 1

Standard Carrier

Provides the primary configurable measurement position. Contact location, stylus direction, indicator range and resolution should be selected from the drawing and inspection plan.

Measurement Position 2

Side Carrier

Provides the lateral access that defines the K1 architecture. Use the Side Carrier when the second inspection feature is better reached from the side of the supported component.

K1-20 does not inherently measure two fixed characteristics. The characteristics being evaluated are determined by the two indicator contact locations, component drawing, datum relationship and inspection procedure.
Standard Carrier

The primary configurable measurement position.

The Standard Carrier supports the first indicator position around the rotating component. It should be configured from the actual inspection feature—not copied from a catalog photograph.

Measurement feature Determine the journal, shoulder, face, diameter or other feature to be evaluated.
Datum relationship Understand what the indicator reading represents relative to the supported rotational axis.
Stylus clearance Account for shoulders, steps, grooves, threads and neighboring geometry.
Indicator selection Choose resolution and range appropriate to the inspection requirement.

K1-20 Side Carrier lateral indicator measurement position detail
K1-20 Side Carrier detail. Lateral access for the second measurement position is the defining K1 feature.
Side Carrier Architecture

Lateral indicator access is what separates K1 from K2.

The second indicator position on the K1-20 is mounted using a Side Carrier. This provides lateral access to a feature that may not be most conveniently reached from the primary carrier position.

Choose K1-20 when the second indicator needs Side Carrier access. Choose K2-20 when the second indicator needs Vertical Carrier access.

Because K1-20 and K2-20 share the same published -20 component envelope, the correct model is determined by measurement access and carrier architecture, not diameter and length alone.

-20 Roller Selection

Stable dual-indicator inspection begins with the correct support geometry.

Both indicator positions reference the same supported rotational setup, which makes the component support geometry fundamental to the inspection.

120-20FP · Full Plain Full plain main roller set for suitable -20 support geometries.
120-20HP · Half Plain Half plain support where additional clearance around nearby features is required.
120-20QP · Quarter Plain Quarter plain geometry for narrower or more constrained cylindrical support lands.
Engineering rule: the correct K1-20 roller configuration is determined by the usable cylindrical support lands, not simply by the maximum diameter of the component.

Current Universal Punch documentation identifies 170-20, approximately 3/4 × 9/32 in (19 × 7 mm), as the standard -20 top roller. Other -20 top-contact geometries may be appropriate depending on the part.

How K1-20 Is Configured

Support. Position. Rotate. Observe.

01
Support the component. Select -20 roller geometry from stable cylindrical support surfaces.
02
Position the Standard Carrier indicator. Configure the first measurement contact around the drawing and tolerance.
03
Position the Side Carrier indicator. Configure lateral access for the second required measurement location.
04
Rotate the supported component. Use controlled rotation to observe indicator response through the inspection cycle.
05
Interpret both readings from the inspection plan. The drawing and datum relationship determine what each indicator reading means.
Indicator Configuration

Configure each measurement position independently.

Two measurement positions do not necessarily require identical indicator geometry. Each can be selected around the feature, access, range and resolution required at that location.

Indicator 1 · Standard Carrier Define resolution, range, stylus reach and contact direction for the first measurement location.
Indicator 2 · Side Carrier Define resolution, range, stylus geometry and lateral carrier location for the second feature.
Calibration & documentation Specify required accuracy class, traceability and inspection documentation at the time of quotation.
Manual & Motorized Rotation

Choose the rotational method around the inspection workflow.

Roller support, top contact, rotation and both indicator positions together form the complete K1-20 measurement setup.

Manufacturer-Controlled K1-20 Reference

Why Universal Punch is the source for configuring the K1-20.

A useful K1-20 page must explain more than capacity. The correct inspection system depends on component support, two measurement-access locations, indicator geometry, accuracy requirements, calibration and rotational control.

That manufacturer-controlled context explains not only what the K1-20 is, but when Standard + Side Carrier dual-indicator architecture is the correct engineering choice.
