HL-40 Definition

The 24-inch extended-shaft platform for the large -40 diameter class.

HL identifies Universal Punch's Extended Shaft Gage architecture. -40 identifies the large-diameter class. The Vertical Carrier positions the measurement indicator above the supported component.

The HL-40 is intended for applications that require both a large cylindrical component envelope and substantially more axial capacity than a conventional -40 concentricity gage.

24-Inch Extended Shaft Architecture

Large diameter and long shaft length create a different inspection problem.

The HL-40 extends the large -40 shaft platform to a published maximum part length of 24 in / 610 mm.

Extended-shaft inspection envelope. The HL-40 provides 24 in / 610 mm of published part-length capacity for the -40 diameter class.

Length changes the setup geometry.

As component length increases, the inspection setup must account for more than maximum diameter. The locations of usable support surfaces and the relationship between those surfaces and the feature being measured become central to repeatable rotational inspection.

Support spacingLong shafts increase the distance between available support surfaces.
Shaft stiffnessLarge or long components can respond differently to support and contact forces.
Journal geometryShoulders, splines, threads, grooves and tapers affect usable support lands.
Measurement accessThe Vertical Carrier and stylus must reach the actual inspection feature.
Selection principle: choose the HL-40 when the component requires the large -40 diameter class and an inspection envelope beyond the H-40's 12-inch capacity, up to 24 inches.

H / HL -40 Shaft Support

Support geometry should be selected from the actual component.

Current Universal Punch parts documentation identifies 140-40HS as the Full Plain Short Roller Set for the -40 H-family size class, with a published roller length of 1.0 in / 25 mm.

The same current documentation identifies 230-40, measuring 1 × 5/16 in (25 × 8 mm), as the standard top roller in the -40 family.

  • shoulder and flange clearance
  • splines, threads, grooves and tapers
  • shaft stiffness and overhang
  • distance between support points
  • location of the feature being inspected
Two components with the same 4-inch maximum diameter and 24-inch overall length can still require different HL-40 support configurations.
