HL-20 Extended Shaft Concentricity Gage

Precision concentricity and runout inspection for shafts up to 24 inches long.

The Universal Punch HL-20 is an Extended Shaft Concentricity Gage with a Vertical Carrier for long cylindrical components from 3/8–2 in (10–50 mm) in diameter and up to 24 in (610 mm) long.

Its extended base and H/HL support architecture provide the inspection envelope needed for longer shafts while preserving configurable indicator positioning over the feature being measured.

HL-20 Definition

The -20 platform for exceptionally long shafts.

HL identifies Universal Punch's Extended Shaft Gage architecture. -20 identifies the 3/8–2 in / 10–50 mm diameter class.

The HL-20 is intended for parts that fit the -20 diameter envelope but require substantially more axial inspection capacity than standard short-part or standard-shaft configurations.

24-Inch Extended Shaft Architecture

When shaft length becomes the defining requirement.

The HL-20 doubles the published maximum shaft-length capacity of the H-20 while remaining in the same 3/8–2 in diameter class.

Long shafts change the inspection problem.

Extended cylindrical components require more than additional base length. Stable rotational inspection depends on the actual geometry of the shaft and the relationship between support surfaces and the feature being checked.

Support spacingLonger distance between support lands changes setup geometry.
Shaft stiffnessLong slender components can be more sensitive to loading and overhang.
Journal geometryShoulders, grooves, splines and threads affect usable support locations.
Measurement accessThe indicator must reach the actual inspection feature at the required contact direction.
Selection principle: choose the HL-20 when the component requires the -20 diameter class and an inspection envelope beyond 12 inches and up to 24 inches.

H / HL Shaft Support Architecture

Configure the support geometry around the actual shaft.

Universal Punch publishes dedicated H/HL shaft-support hardware and a dedicated 120-20HS Full Plain Short Roller Set for the -20 H-family size class. The published short roller length is 0.8 in / 22 mm.

Support selection should be based on the usable journals and surrounding component geometry rather than nominal diameter alone.

  • support-journal diameter and width
  • shoulder and flange clearance
  • splines, threads, grooves and tapers
  • shaft stiffness and overhang
  • distance between support points
  • location of the feature being inspected
Two shafts with the same diameter and overall length can require different HL-20 support configurations.

Vertical Carrier & Indicator System

Put the measurement probe where the print requires it.

The HL-20 uses a Vertical Carrier to position the indicator above the supported shaft. Universal Punch publishes multiple analog and digital indicators along with dovetail mounts, swivel supports, extension holders and precision fine-adjustment accessories.

Universal Punch Gaging-System Method

Configure the system in three engineering decisions.

Universal Punch describes its Concentricity Gaging System as three main components: select the gage model, select the main rollers, then select the indicator(s) and accessories.

1 · Select HL-20Use the extended -20 platform when the shaft requires up to 24 in / 610 mm of part-length capacity.
2 · Configure support geometrySelect roller and end-support arrangements from the actual support journals and shaft geometry.
3 · Configure measurement hardwareChoose indicator, stylus, carrier location, stops, accuracy class and drive system from the inspection requirement.
