H-20 Standard Shaft Concentricity Gage
Precision concentricity and runout inspection for shafts up to 12 inches long.
The Universal Punch H-20 is a Standard Shaft Concentricity Gage with a Vertical Carrier, designed for cylindrical shafts and elongated components that require substantially more inspection length than a conventional -20 platform. Published capacity is 3/8–2 in (10–50 mm) diameter with part lengths up to 12 in (305 mm).
The H-20 combines the -20 diameter class with dedicated H/HL shaft-support architecture, allowing long cylindrical components to be supported while the indicator is positioned vertically over the required inspection feature.
A purpose-built concentricity gage for longer shafts.
The H-20 extends the Universal Punch -20 concentricity-gaging class specifically for longer cylindrical parts. H identifies the Standard Shaft Gage architecture, while -20 identifies the 3/8–2 in / 10–50 mm diameter class.
Where many standard -20 Universal Punch platforms publish a maximum part length of approximately 6 in, the H-20 increases published capacity to 12 in / 305 mm. It is therefore selected when a part remains within the -20 diameter class but requires a substantially longer support and inspection envelope.
Select the H-20 when diameter fits the -20 class but shaft length drives the application.
Long-shaft inspection is not only a question of nominal diameter. The support journals, distance between support locations, shoulders, splines, grooves, threads, shaft stiffness, overhang and measurement feature all influence the final H-20 configuration.
Define the diameter, shoulder, journal or other rotational feature being evaluated and its datum relationship.
Select stable cylindrical surfaces and confirm usable support widths around adjacent geometry.
Place the indicator above the required feature with appropriate stylus direction, range and clearance.
Use H/HL roller and support accessories appropriate to journal spacing, overhang and the component drawing.
The -20 shaft platform extends part length to 12 inches.

Dedicated short rollers support the shaft-gaging architecture.
Current Universal Punch parts documentation separates the H and HL families from the general Full Plain / Half Plain / Quarter Plain roller listing and publishes dedicated Full Plain Short Roller Sets for H-10, H-20 and H-40.
Support geometry must come from the actual shaft.
The correct H-20 setup depends on journal width, shoulders, splines, grooves, threads, bearing surfaces, distance between support points, shaft stiffness, overhang and the feature being inspected.
Configure the measurement system around the tolerance.
Universal Punch publishes a broad selection of analog and digital test indicators together with indicator mounts, swivel supports and carrier attachments. The H-20 should therefore be configured around the actual inspection requirement rather than being locked into one indicator type.
The H-20 is a configurable shaft-inspection system, not simply a fixture.
Universal Punch publishes a dedicated H/HL accessory family for long-shaft applications. This expands the H-20 beyond its base frame and allows support and measurement access to be configured around actual component geometry.
Support and end-control options
Published H/HL categories include support roller assemblies, wide end roller supports, end roller supports, fixed carbide Vee assemblies, stops and pusher components.
Carrier and indicator options
Published H/HL categories include horizontal indicator carriers, front horizontal carriers, vertical indicator carriers, fine-adjustment attachments, vertical roller checker carriers and end dial-test-indicator carriers.
The -20 class is published in Standard Black and Precision Gold accuracy tiers.
Standard production classification
Current parts documentation states that the Concentricity Gaging System classifications are calibrated and directly traceable to NIST.
Higher published accuracy classification
Because H-20 is a -20 model, it is within the model class for which Precision Gold is published. Confirm the final ordered H-20 configuration and calibration package when quoting.
Smooth controlled shaft rotation is fundamental to rotational inspection.
Universal Punch documents a manual timing-belt pulley drive architecture that provides smooth part rotation during inspection. The H/HL accessory list also publishes dedicated timing-belt sets for H and HL models.
As the supported shaft rotates, the indicator tracks variation at the selected measurement feature. Roller support, shaft loading, indicator contact and rotation method should all be treated as part of one measurement setup.
A dedicated H-20 variable-speed motor assembly is currently published.
Current Universal Punch parts documentation lists Part No. 274-20 — H-20 Variable Speed Motor Assembly with a 17 in / 432 mm base plate. The current drive-system section identifies 24 VDC / 0–10 rpm operation with forward/reverse control and 110/220 VAC transformer support.
The H-20 owns the 12-inch shaft envelope in the -20 diameter class.

Questions engineers, quality teams and buyers ask before specifying a long-shaft concentricity gage.
The shaft drawing—not the model number alone—determines the final inspection system.
Send Universal Punch the part drawing, shaft diameter, overall length, support journal diameters and widths, nearby shoulders, splines, grooves or threads, feature being measured, measurement direction, tolerance, required indicator resolution, calibration requirements, production or inspection volume, and whether manual or motorized rotation is preferred.
