Why B-20

Built for the point where small-part gaging needs more room.

The B-20 is the next step beyond the B-10 for cylindrical parts that require a larger published diameter range, additional part length, or a more comfortable medium-diameter inspection envelope.

The platform retains the Universal Punch concentricity-gaging architecture: precision roller support, an adjustable top-arm yoke, a fine-adjustment indicator carrier, and controlled manual rotation through the timing-belt drive system.

Technical dimensions, without the clutter.

Use these published B-20 dimensions as the starting point for model selection. Final roller support, indicator access, and setup should be matched to the actual part and inspection requirement.

Engineered rotational inspection

The Universal system is built around four controllable elements.

Rather than treating the gage as a generic bench fixture, the B-20 combines support, stabilization, indicator positioning, and controlled rotation into one modular inspection platform.

01 Precision Roller Support

Support the part on the roller family selected for its diameter, geometry, and measurement access.

02 Adjustable Top-Arm Yoke

Position the multi-position top-arm yoke to stabilize the part during rotational inspection.

03 Fine-Adjustment Indicator Carrier

Move the carrier to the measurement location, position the indicator, and establish the reference reading.

04 Manual Timing-Belt Rotation

Rotate the part smoothly through the timing-belt drive and observe indicator variation through the inspection cycle.

Roller configuration

Support geometry is part of the measurement strategy.

Universal Punch publishes multiple main-roller families. The correct roller geometry depends on the actual support surface, adjacent features, and where the indicator must contact the part.

120FP

Full Plain Rollers

Broad cylindrical support for the medium-size roller family.

120HP

Half Plain Rollers

Reduced roller width where additional clearance near a feature is helpful.

120QP

Quarter Plain Rollers

Narrower support geometry for localized contact and measurement access.

CUSTOM

Special Main Rollers

Application-specific roller geometry when a standard configuration does not fit the part.

If the part has a shoulder, thread, reduced support land, interrupted surface, or restricted indicator access, send the print to Universal Punch before choosing the roller set.

Configuration & support

A gage is only as useful as the setup around the part.

Universal Punch can review the inspection task and help determine the appropriate B-20 configuration, roller support, indicator arrangement, accessories, and service requirements.

Applications

Where the B-20 fits.

The B-20 is intended for repeatable rotational inspection of medium-diameter cylindrical components. Application fit depends on the support surface, feature being checked, measurement location, and part envelope.

01

Turned Shafts

Evaluate rotational accuracy on medium-diameter cylindrical parts.

02

Ground Spindles

Verify repeatable runout and concentricity on precision ground components.

03

Fasteners & Specials

Inspect larger fasteners, specials, and formed components.

04

Incoming Inspection

Compare suppliers, lots, and setups with repeatable variable readings.

05

Production QA

Use at the bench or in quality for fast in-process verification.

06

Custom Programs

Configure rollers and accessories around the measurement task.

B-10 vs B-20

Choose the platform by the part envelope.

B-10 remains the smaller platform. B-20 is the logical step when the required diameter range and part length move beyond the B-10 envelope.

Small-diameter extended model B-10
1/8–1 in Diameter
Up to 4 in Part length
Medium-diameter model B-20
3/8–2 in Diameter
Up to 6 in Part length

Selection rule: move to B-20 when the part requires more diameter range, more length, or a medium-diameter working envelope that the B-10 does not provide.

B-20 FAQ

Common questions before model selection.

Use these answers as a starting point. Final suitability should be confirmed against the actual part, support geometry, measurement location, and inspection requirement.

What size parts can the B-20 inspect?
The published B-20 range is 3/8 in to 2 in (10 mm to 50 mm) in part diameter with part lengths up to 6 in (152 mm).
What are the published B-20 gage dimensions?
Universal publishes a B-20 gage length of 12.5 in (318 mm), gage width of 4.5 in (114 mm), and shipping weight of 6.4 lb (2.9 kg).
How is the B-20 different from the B-10?
The B-10 covers 1/8 in to 1 in diameter and parts up to 4 in long. The B-20 increases the published envelope to 3/8 in to 2 in diameter and parts up to 6 in long.
How does the Universal concentricity gage system rotate the part?
Universal describes a manual drive timing-belt pulley system as a standard feature across its concentricity gaging system, providing smooth controlled part rotation during inspection.
What roller options are available?
Universal publishes Full Plain, Half Plain, Quarter Plain, Zero Style, Extra Thin Zero, and special roller families. Final roller selection should be confirmed against the actual part geometry.
Can Universal Punch help configure a B-20?
Yes. Send the part print, diameter, length, support surfaces, feature being checked, and inspection objective so Universal Punch can review the application.
Is calibration or service support available?
Universal Punch supports gaging, calibration, and application review. Use the Quality or Contact sections of the site for current service and documentation information.
