Concentricity Gages & Rotational Inspection Systems
Compare Universal Punch systems by inspection application, part diameter, length, carrier arrangement, support geometry, indicator positions and rotation method.
Manufacturer guidance: model capacity is only the starting point. Final rollers, support locations, measurement access and indicator or Lazer configuration must be selected from the part and inspection requirement.

Direct technical answer
What a concentricity gage actually does.
A Universal Punch concentricity gage supports a cylindrical component on controlled contact geometry, rotates the component and allows one or more indicators—or a configured Lazer system—to observe dimensional variation at selected features.
The measured variation is meaningful only in relation to the support condition, datum structure, probe direction, measurement location and inspection procedure. Diameter capacity alone does not establish the correct model or support geometry.
Plain-language definition
Concentricity gage: a precision rotational-inspection platform configured to support and rotate a cylindrical component while dimensional variation is observed at a defined feature.
SupportEstablish the intended rotational reference on selected component lands.
RotateTurn the supported component manually or with the specified drive method.
ObserveRead dimensional variation at the configured feature and probe direction.
What is TIR?
Total indicator reading is commonly the difference between the highest and lowest observed values through the specified rotation. Its interpretation depends on the setup and characteristic.
Is TIR the same as concentricity?
No. A variable indicator reading does not automatically prove the GD&T concentricity characteristic. The inspection method must match the drawing requirement.
Why do support lands matter?
The selected rollers establish the supported rotational reference. Shoulders, grooves, threads, transitions and insufficient land width can change support suitability.
Why use multiple indicators?
K and KK configurations provide two or three independently configurable contact positions. They do not permanently assign universal characteristics to those positions.
How to specify a system
Configure the system in four decisions.
Universal Punch selection documentation separates the gage model, main rollers, measurement equipment and accessories. A customer-facing workflow begins with the inspection architecture and part envelope.
01
Inspection architecture
Define the feature, datum relationship, probe access and number of measurement positions.
02
Part envelope
Confirm diameter, length, support-journal sizes, usable land widths and component stiffness.
03
Support geometry
Select main rollers and top contact around shoulders, threads, grooves and transitions.
04
Measurement and drive
Specify indicators or Lazer equipment, resolution, calibration documentation and rotation method.
Main rollers & top contact
Support geometry is part of the measurement system.
Choose roller geometry from the actual usable support surfaces—not nominal diameter alone. Preserve clearance around shoulders, threads, splines, grooves and the feature being inspected.
Full PlainBroad support geometry across published 110FP, 120FP and 140FP families.Half PlainReduced-width support geometry across published 110HP, 120HP and 140HP families.Quarter PlainNarrower support geometry across published 110QP, 120QP and 140QP families.Zero StylePublished -10 configurations for very small diameters or difficult access conditions.Top ContactTop-roller size and contact geometry must match the selected component support condition.Special RollersApplication-specific geometry may be evaluated when standard rollers do not fit the part.
Accuracy, indicators & drive
Model size is only part of the specification.
Confirm the selected model’s current classification, indicator or Lazer equipment, calibration documentation and complete application setup during quotation.
Standard Black≤4 μm
Published system classification. Confirm the selected model and documentation requirement.
Precision Gold≤2 μm
Published for applicable -10 and -20 configurations. Do not assume eligibility for every model.
MeasurementIndicator / Lazer
Range, resolution, stylus or head position and output must match the inspection requirement.
RotationManual / Motorized
Selected standard models may be configured with a drive; LGM identifies a dedicated motorized Lazer family.

Inspection workflow
Manual vs motorized rotation
Choose rotation based on component control, inspection volume and measurement process requirements.
A concentricity gage supports a cylindrical component on controlled roller contacts and rotates the part while one or more indicators or a configured measurement system monitors dimensional variation. The setup and inspection method determine how the observed variation should be interpreted.
What does a concentricity gage measure?
It observes dimensional variation at a selected feature while the component rotates about the support condition established by the gage. The reading may support runout or concentricity-related inspection when the datum, contact locations and procedure match the drawing requirement.
Does the displayed reading automatically prove GD&T concentricity?
No. A variable indicator reading is not automatically equivalent to the GD&T concentricity characteristic. Interpretation depends on the datum structure, support geometry, measurement location, probe direction and approved inspection method.
What is TIR?
TIR commonly refers to total indicator reading: the difference between the highest and lowest observed indicator values through the specified rotation. Its meaning depends on the setup and characteristic being evaluated.
How do I choose the correct Universal Punch model?
Start with the inspection application and required measurement access. Then confirm part diameter, length, support surfaces, roller geometry, indicator positions, accuracy requirement and rotation method. Universal Punch can review the component drawing before the final configuration is specified.
What do -10, -20 and -40 mean?
They identify common diameter classes used across multiple Universal Punch families. -10 models commonly cover 1/8 to 1 inch, -20 models 3/8 to 2 inches and -40 models 3/4 to 4 inches. Exact length and architecture depend on the selected family.
What roller configurations are available?
Published main-roller families include Full Plain, Half Plain and Quarter Plain configurations. The -10 family also includes Zero Style options, and special roller geometry may be configured for difficult support surfaces.
What accuracy classifications are published?
Universal Punch documentation identifies Standard Black at 4 micrometers or better and Precision Gold at 2 micrometers or better for applicable -10 and -20 configurations. LG literature separately identifies a catalog accuracy statement. Confirm current model eligibility and calibration documentation when ordering.
Can a concentricity gage be motorized?
Manual rotation is used across standard configurations, while selected models can be configured with motorized drives. LGM identifies the dedicated motorized Lazer family. Rotation requirements should be confirmed during application review.
What should I submit for an application review?
Send the component drawing, diameter, length, usable support lands, feature being inspected, datum structure, measurement location, tolerance, desired indicator or Lazer configuration, rotation preference and calibration-documentation requirements.
Application review
Send the drawing before you guess.
Provide the component drawing, diameter, length, usable support lands, datum structure, feature location, tolerance, measurement positions, rotation preference and calibration-documentation requirements. Universal Punch can help identify the appropriate starting model and configuration.
